STATE LOTTERIES
BAPTIST OPPOSITION
x THE MAIN CONTENTIONS
(By Telegraph.) (Special to the 'Evening Post.")
DUNEDIN, This Day
The Otago and Southland auxiliary of the New Zealand Baptist Union passed a resolution strongly disapproving of the proposal that the State should conduct official lotteries or permit lotteries to be conducted under official licence and urging the Government to reject it.
It points out:— 1. That, in 'countries where similar, proposals have- been adopted this method has hot been found an economical way of raising money for any object on account of high running charges and the cost of prizes. 2. That it has had an unsatisfactory effect upon the generosity of the public in giving financial assistance to worthy objects through the growth of a desire for chance of a reward whenever any sum is subscribed.
3. Further, that gambling has always been found harmful to the moral fibre of the individual or nation and therefore the Government ought never to take any action to sponsor, promote, or facilitate it.
