NAVY LEAGUE

WAKEFIELD MEMORIAL

PROJECT

A suggestion from various bodies in Canterbury that New Zealand should establish a national memorial to Edward Gibbon Wakefield was supported at a meeting of the Wellington branch of the Navy League yesterday. The memorial would take the form of a travelling scholarship, awarded for (a) an examination and/or thesis on New Zealand history and/or colonial policy in general; (b) the greatest contribution —political, literary, educational, or other —towards any mpvement for the progress of New Zealand as a nation in the British Commonwealth.

It was decided to inform the Canterbury bodies of the branch's agreement with the suggestion.

A sub-committee consisting of Messrs. G. Reid, L. O. H. Tripp, R. Darroch, Dr. Kronfeld, and Captain A. V. Hale Monro was appointed to arrange an afternoon function in connection with the visit of Earl and Lady Beatty to Wellington in February.

It was stated that the New Zealand conference of branches of the Navy League would be held in Wellington on February 3.
