IN DEFENCE OF MOTORISTS

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —I have. been surprised to hear references made as if all motorists were potential murderers of the children of New Zealand. I would like to know what is the actual percentage of the registered motorists in New Zealand who have had a fatal accident— also the percentage of accidents where the injured party has been a contributing factor. As a driver of ten years without an accident of any description, in my opinion it is high time that motorists should take a definite stand against propaganda aimed at them. All drivers can tell you of the hundreds of times they have hurriedly applied brakes to save pedestrians from the consequences of their own folly. I grant there is a small, very small, minority of careless drivers, and they should be treated according' to their sins, but" to suggest to the people that all motorists are potential murderers is unreasonable.—l am, etc., ORDINARY MOTORIST.
