MEMBERSHIP DROPS

WELLINGTON ROWING CLUB

There are now 100 active members of the Wellington Rowing Club, which is a decline in numbers, but the members now on the list can be regarded as keen and active, according to the report presented at the half-yearly meeting of the Wellington Rowing Club last night. The captain, Mr. W. T. Jury, presided in the absence of the president, Mr. W. J. Gaudin. At the close of last season, the report stated, the active membership was 113 as compared with 120 the year before. Twenty-three members had resigned and six had been transferred to the honorary list, bringing the number down to 84. As against that, 29 new members had been elected, leaving the membership at 113 compared with 135 at the same time last year. Of the 113 members, 13 had been put on a special list because of non-pay-ment of subscriptions, leaving the active membership at 100.

"Though this may seem a big drop compared with 135 members last December," continued the report, "the committee feels that it is better to have 100 keen, active members than 135, many of whom had not paid their subscriptions and took no part in club activities. There are 14 nominees awaiting election to membership."

The plant as a whole could not be said to be in first-class condition, though the efforts of a few had put a limited number of boats in good order, the report added. As a permanent measure of protection, four sets of riggers had been galvanised at a cost of £4.

Two club races had been completed, the position being the same as for the two previous years. It was hoped that members would take an acitve part in all races this year and that the newmembers would thus improve their racing experience, to the benefit of regatta performances in future.
