CONCERT AT PORIRUA
PROCEEDS FOR SCHOOL
The glee and drama circles of the Porirua Women's Institute, assisted by the Porirua junior choir, held a concert in Prosser's Hall recently in aid of the local school funds. There was a large and appreciative audience and the efforts of the entertainers met with hearty applause.
The institute choir items included "The Blue Danube Waltz" (Strauss), "O, the Pleasant Spring" (from Mendelssohn's "Spring Song"), "The Bells of Aberdovey" (Welsh air), and "Lullaby" (Brahms). The junior choir numbers were "Early One Morning," "List to the Convent Bells," "A Spring Song," "Ye Gentle Warblers," and "Flowers! Flowers!" Both choirs were under the capable leadership of Mrs. L. Thompson, with Miss Andrews as accompanist.
Two humorous sketches presented by drama circle members were entitled "Tea and Scandal" and "Social Difficulties." Also contributing to the programme were Miss Levy (elocutionary items), Miss Newton (Maori songs), Mrs. Campbell (songs), Mesdames L. Thompson and Wright (vocal duet), and Mr. J. Greer (tap dances).
Mrs. Ryan, institute president, handed over the proceeds from the concert lo Mr. Jackson, a representative of the school committee, who responded with thanks. A bouquet and box of flowers were presented to Mrs. L. Thompson, and the singing of "Haere Ra" by Miss Newton and the combined choirs concluded a very enjoyable and successful concert.
