NAPIER, This Day
The challenge to the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semplei to debate the Hawke's Bay river con-tx-ol issue on the public platform wa.s renewed by the chairman of the Hawke's Bay Rivers Board (Mr. C Lassen) in a statement he made thir morning in reply to Mr. Scmple't comments.
The challenge had been thrown out and the Minister should be man enough to accept it, Mr. Lassen saia
•'I am not surprised to hear that thy Minister of Public Works will not accept the board's challenge to debate the works on the Ngaruroro scheme: because it was the Pakowhai settlers who made the charge and not him. Mr. Semple must have a very short memory, because on his last two visits to Napier he stated firstly thai the Rivers Board had 'mucked the job up, and secondly thai it was a most unsatisfactory job. Me now stales that he had justifiable grounds for so saying. This the board emphatically denies,- and I am quite prepared to debate the issue that it is Mr. Scmplc's interference with the board that has been the whole trouble."
