WELLINGTON AWARDS
COLLEGE AGAIN HONOURED
The recent award of a Rhodes Scholarship to lan Ellis Berendsen, of Wellington, makes him the' fourths old boy of Wellington College to be so honoured. The others were P. N. Robertson, now Professor Robertson, dux in 1900 and Rhodes Scholar in 1905; A. MacDougall, Rhodes Scholar in 1909, who %/as killed in the Great War; and H. A. Mackenzie, dux in 1913 and Rhodes Scholar in 1918, who relinquished his scholarship.
Writing to the secretary of the Wellington College Board of Governors, the headmaster of Wellington College (Mr. W. A. Armour) gives the following details of Berendsen's scholastic career: 1931, Form 3a, third; 1932, Form 4a. first; 1933, Form sa, first; 1934, Form 6a, second. He entered Victoria University College in 1935. While at Wellington College he won the Richardson History Scholarship and a Turnbull Scholarship. He also won a University National Scholarship.
"He was a good runner and always a prominent competitor in track events," states Mr. Armour. "He played for the second Rugby fifteen and was captain of the third cricket eleven. He was also a sergeant in our cadet battalion. Under a quiet exterior he easily showed himself to be a lad of strong and deliberate character. He has fine physique, pleasing personality, and a great capacity for work, and a special ability in languages. Though not yet 20 years of age he holds the B.A. degree, a senior scholarship in French, and has sat for his M.A. degree."
