WELLINGTON V. HUTT VALLEY

The fact that competition points were not affected by the game between representative teams from the Hutt Valley and Wellington Cricket Associations played at the Hutt Recreation Ground on Saturday afternoon was probably the reason why most of the batsmen were more venturesome than usual. However, the bright display put up by batsmen was to some extent marred by the slowness of the fielding, particularly on the part of Hutt Valley. Wellington batted first, the opening .pair being Scott and Crook. A good catch by Cummings at fine leg put Crook out when he had only scored 2, but Scott stayed in and gave the best performance of the afternoon. His total of 61 included five 4's. In the early stages of the innings he was joined by Monteath, who hit out freely and the partnership produced 55 runs in 35 minutes. Gates (31) also batted well. Scoring was rapid throughout the! innings. The first hour saw 70 on the board, the century was reached in 80 minutes, and 150 in 105 minutes. At the afternoon tea adjournment, 125 minutes after the start, Wellington had made 166 for the loss of eight wickets. During the adjournment it was decided to declare. When Hutt Valley went in they were called upon to face much more efficient fielding and more effective bowling than they had themselves provided in the first innings, and with eight wickets down for 132 it did not appear that they would reach the Wellington total. However, dogged play by Wright (38 not out) and Scott (24) gained the day and the 166 mark was passed with fifteen minutes left to go. The tenth wicket fell to the first ball of the last over. Gill (37), Cummings (26), and Holland (22) also batted well. Foley (five for 29) headed the bowling averages and Buchan (three for 37) was the most effective man on the Wellington side. The teams were: — Wellington.—J. Scott, R. Crook, A. P Monteath, R. Buddie. A. Gates, A. McLean, A. Thompson., M. Bilby, J. RaIbone, T. Muir, and R. Buchan. Hutt Valley.—W. B. Barnes. H. Wright, R.
