NEW BRIGHTON TROTS
LAWN DERBY'S FEAT
GALLANT KNIGHT'S SUCCESS
(Special to the "Evening Post.") CHRISTCHURCH, December 3. Rain early threatened to spoil the New Brighton Trotting Club's Summer Meeting, dir rather its main attraction —the attack by Lawn Derby on the mile grass record. The rain did not last long, and the weather, was fine till just before the time trial, when there was a light shower. The track was in excellent order, but there was a strong north-easterly wind. Lawn Derby, pacing evenly all the way, registered 2min 3sec in his attempt, after doing the first two furlongs in 31 3-ssec, the half-mile in lmin 1 3-ssee, and six' furlongs iri lmin 33 2-ssec. Under the conditions, it was a I brilliant performance, which roused the enthusiasm of the crowd. FAVOURITE BREAKS. The Trial Handicap saw Lady Ede, the favourite, run back at the start, interfering with Shadeland, who lost his driver. Escalado took the lead six furlongs from home, Bon Chance and Syntax following him along the back, these three being well clear at the half-mile post and retaining their- advantage to the straight. Escalado seemed to be going comfortably but; he tired, Bon Chance getting up on the post to win by a head. Syntax was three lengths away, with Gentleman Joe and Gaynor close up. The winner is a fairly solid trotter. STABLE'S GOOD RUN. Going to the back, in the Improvers' Handicap, Wee- Potts and Precious Metal were in front, Colonel Axworthy and Evora following them past the half-mile post; Waitemata broke three furlongs from home, and in a mix-up Cruiser and Llewellyn's Pet lost their drivers. Ace High was moving up at this stage. Wee Potts and Precious Metal led Colonel Axworthy to the straight, with Ace High closing up. Wee Potts was beaten a furlong from the post and Precious Metal won by a length, while Ace High got up on the post to cut Colonel Axworthy out of second place. Wee Potts was fpurth, Evora heading1 the others. The winner is from the stable of M. C. McTigue, whose horses are having a great run at present. . -, ' A COMFORTABLE WIN. Rey Spec tangled at the start of the Mace Memorial Handicap, interfering with Lucky Jack. Gallant Knight and War Buoy were soon in charge from Blair Athol and Isabel Derby, but King's Play moved up going to the back and at the half-mile post he was showing the way to Ironside and Bonny Azure. There was no change to the straight, where Gallant Knight dashed to the lead and won easily. Blair Athol stayed on to beat King's Play for second, with Bonny Azure, Ironside, and Harold Logan, next. It was a very impressive performance by the winner. A PROMISING PACER. Black Marble set the pace from the start of the Wainoni Handicap, Mazaire, Nelson Eddy, Gentleman Joe, and Jambo following her after two furlongs. Nelson Eddy led Gentleman Joe to the straight and held his place to win by half a length. Loyal Avis came from a long way back to be third, with Mazaire staying on well at the head of the others. Nelson Eddy, by Nelson Derby, looks like being a good horse. ■ - ■ A GENERAL MIX-UP. The Bowhill Handicap was spoilt by an accident about three furlongs from home, which left only three horses with any chance. At the end of a mile, run at a slow pace, Morewa and Dark Hazard were showing the way to Lightning Lady and Nell Grattan^ Just after passing the half-mile post Dark Hazard tangled badly and in dropping back caused a general mix-up. Marlene and Fremont lost their drivers, while only Morewa, Zincali, and Lightning Lady escaped the trouble. These three turned for home in that order, but Lightning Lady finished fast to beat Morewa by a length, Zincali being half a length away. Four lengths back Horse Power came on with a brilliant run, am exceptional performance, with the handicap of a damaged sulky wheel. GUY HUGO SURPRISES. ■ Gyrate soon rushed to the front in the Saltaire. Handicap, with Sister Mary, Indolent,' and Reward next. Reward was in front after half a mile, Sister Mary, Gyrate, and Indolent following him past the stand. Guy Hugo moved up going to the back, heading Reward at the half-mile post, where Royal Romance was improving her position. Guy Hugo led to the straight and won by three lengths, and Reward stalled 6ff Royal Romance by half a length. Gyrate was close up. ICEVUS MUCH IMPROVED. j The New Brighton Handicap was a j very fast race. Sage King set the early pace from Moana Tama and Aristotle., while at the end of half a mile Conrienora, Icevus, and Southern Chief were handy. Icevus moved up fast after six furlongs and a little further on he headed Sage King, with Aristotle and Connenora heading the others. Icevus tired over the last furlong, but lasted long enough to win by nearly a length from Southern Chief, who beat Connenora by half a length. Twenty Grand got up on the post to beat Sage King for fourth. Icevus is a muchimproved horse. THE MILE SADDLE. Heather Queen and Cavan Chief lost ground through tangling at the start of the Electric Handicap. Racketeer led for two furlongs, when Lynwood headed him, while a little further on Cavan Chief took third place, with Waipahi next. Cavan Chief was second at the half-mile post, Lynwood having a lead of four lengths. Waipahi followed these two to the straight.
