THE TWO CUPS
PAST DOUBLE WINNERS
The task that Arctic King has to face of winning the Auckland Cup on top of the New Zealand Cup in the same year is not one that is without precedent. No fewer than seven horses have already been successful in capturing this important double. The following are the seven horses who have so succeeded, with the weights they carried in the 'two races: New Zealand Auckland Cup. Cup. 1935—Cuddle 7.13 9.0 1932—Fast Passage .... S.O S.ll . 1027—Rapier 7.11 8.10 1922—Scion 7.10 8.2 1914—Warstcp 7.11 5.9 1892—St. Hippo ....*... 7.7 5.9 ISS2.—Welcome Jack 6.5 7.S Arctic King has been lifted from 8.1 to 8.10 this year for his Riccarton success, a rise of 91b. It will be seen from the above list that every double winner to date, only Scion excepted, has been penalised more than Arctic King has been, the majority of them substantially more. The various rises of the double winners have been: — Welcome Jack, 171b; St. Hippo, 161b; Cuddle, 151b; Rapier, 131b; Warstep, 121b; Fast Passage, 111b; and Scion, 61bTwelve months ago Cerne Abbas I was lifted only 51b in the Auckland Cup after winning the New Zealand Cup, and though sent out favourite, she failed. However, she continued to fail badly subsequently, never again reaching a place in ten starts following that New Zealand 'Cup Meeting, and she has now been retired to the stud. If Cerne Abbas had retained her New Zealand Cup form she would, on all evidence of the records, have won last year's Auckland Cup as well. She adds another to those numerous horses who lost all ability after a success over two miles. *
