BOBBY CALF TRADE
The operations of bobby calf pools associated; with, the New Zealand Cooperative Pig Marketing Association, Ltd., were reviewed at the annual meeting last week. Mr. W, A. Phillips, chairman of the association,.presided.
The report of the National Federation of Co-operative Bobby Calf Pools for the year ended October 28, 11938, showed that the total bobby calf.'collections by the federation for the \ season would exceed 230,000. which represented over 25 per cent, of the total New Zealand killings. This volume equalled over 7,000,0001b on the hooks and 1800 tons of boned veal. Fortyeight pooled areas were gazetteer, of which 28 were in the federation. Pool operations accounted for 66 per cent. of the total collections in the -areas. During the year 23 additional pools had been formed within the federation, while collections from non-pooled areas showed a substantial increase. In his address to suppliers' representatives, Mr. Phillips said the combined account of the association's 26 pools in the federation showed that 4,284,8371b of calves was handled, the proceeds totalling £.60,440. From this gross figure, advance' payments equalled £33,450' cartage costs £7031; railage costs £3575; agents' trucking costs and field supervision £562; special payments £111; incidental expenses £604: administration costs £1510; a total ox. £46 846. The surplus left for distribution totalled £13,593.
