A GAY SCENE

It was a perfect afternoon on Saturday for the annual garden party held in the grounds of the Girls' College. The grounds looked very attractive in the brilliant sunshine. Miss J. Stewart, principal, received, and the guests then wandered round, had tea, and inspected the exhibits in the handcraft section. Some of this work was very much admired, and the skill thus displayed was seen a little later in quite a different setting. The drill displays evoked c great deal of admiration. Some of those present were Sir Thomas and Lady Easterfield, Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Griffen, Sir Theodore and Lady Rigg, Mr. and Miss Carmichael, Mr. and Mrs. P. Beatson, Mr.1 and Mrs. E. B. Izard, Dr. and Mrs. David Miller, Mr. and Mrs. Stedman, Mr. and Mrs. Leggatt, Captain and Mrs. Johnston, Mrs. Childs, Mr. and Mrs. Russell. Faithful Service. Miss S. Brown, matron of the Public Hospital, will retire at the end of the year after over twenty years' service. During her matronship the hospital has increased in size considerably, and the success of the trainees each year, in the hospital and State examinations, has been exceptionally high. Mrs. D. C. Burnette, j and Dr. and Mrs. Johnston. "Growing Up." A most interesting evening was spent by members of the Women's Club when the club's eleventh birthday was celebrated. The'musical and reading circles provided the entertainment, which was of a high order. Those who contributed were Mesdames Tankersley, Alison, T. A. Johnston, Gascoigne, Noble, Moynihan, Dawson, ! Some of the guests were Dr. and Mrs. Mclntyre, Dr. and Mrs. Campbell Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Eric Leggatt, Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Earle, Dr. and Mrs. Johnston. Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Squires, Mr. and Mrs. H. V. Searle, Mr. and Mrs. H. Robison. Personals. Dr. and Mrs. Mclntyre, who have been in Nelson during the week, have returned to Christchurch. Mr. and Mrs. Geddis, Mrs. Geddis, sen. (Wellington), and Mrs. G. Samuel will leave Nelson shortly for the Franz Josef Glacier.
Mr. and Mrs. H. Atmore have returned to Nelson from Wellington.
Seatoun residents are reminded of the garden party which will be held tomorrow at Mrs. Ramsey's home in Inglis Street. Held under the auspices of the St. George's Ladies' Guild, the I party promises to be most enjoyable. Numerous attractions have been arranged.
