UNION METHODS

A tumultuous welcome was accorded Mr. J. W. Andrews, National candidate for Hutt, when he was introduced to Mr. W. Appleton's audience at Mokoia Hall last evening. Prolonged applause and cheering greeted him as he was welcomed by Mr. Appleton as "the new member for Hutt." Mr. Andrews briefly addressed the meeting, dealing particularly with the methods adopted by certain trade unions in the collection of union dues. Members of at least one Hawke's Bay union had been notified to pay twelve months' fees in advance before October 17—otherwise they would lose their jobs. This, the speaker said, showed the worst kind of victimisation and was proof of the Labour unions' fears that the National Party would soon be the Government of the country. They were making sure of their funds a year in advance.
