HUTT VALLEY ESPERANTO CLUB
One of the most successful evenings in the history of the Hutt Valley Esperanto Club took place on Tuesday night in the Methodist Hall, Lower Hutt, when the Miramar Esperanto Society made its first visit en masse. Over sixty members and friends were present. Mr. W. E. Currie, the president, extended a warm welcome to the Miramar Esperantists and, assisted by Mr. Hamilton, put the Miramar president, Mr. Potts, through a mock ceremony, conferring on him the honour of being chief president for the evening. He was then decorated with "La Verda Stelo" suspended from an enormous gold chain.
Mr. Potts opened the programme. Fourteen two-minute sketches were presented by the Miramar Esperantists. These, all humorous, were mostly based on anecdotes and translated into Esperanto by the president. As most of the members taking part had only been learning Esperanto a month or so, the plays were all the more appreciated. A delightful supper was served, after which Mr. Edfnanson, pioneer of Esperanto in New Zealand, thanked the Miramar Society for its fine efforts and congratulated both clubs on the success of the movement of Esperanto in New Zealand.
The final item on the programme was a delightful comedy in Esperanto, "La Plumbisto," also written by Mr. Potts and cleverly and amusingly presented by Mr. and Mrs. Wells, both prominent members of the Miramar Esperanto Society.
