MEMORIAL TO MISS M.
NEWCOMBE

I Representatives of. many public or[ganisations attended a recent meeting ' in Wanganui called to consider a public 1 memorial to the late Miss M. A. NewI combe. The Mayor of Wanganui, Mr. ;W. J. Rogers presided. In outlining i her -proposal that a special memorial [block, ward, or entrance hall at the | Stewart Karitane Home, should be [ dedicated to Miss Nevycombe's memory, Mrs. H. D. Robertson spoke of Miss Newcombe's self-effacing services. "When the extensions and improvements are made to the home, the Plunket Society feels it might? approach the public of Wanganui for assistance in perpetuating her name,'* said Mrs. Robertson. The meeting decided to favour Mrs. Robertson's proposal, and the following committee was elected to give effect to it:—Mesdames H. D. Robertson, M. E. Scott, N. R. Bain, G. N. Currie, W.,S. Rennie, A. H. Boyes, Dr. K. L. Widdowson, Messrs. W. J. Rogers, W. K. Carman, C N. Armstrong, H. C. Jenkins, Hope Gibbons, B. R. Dobbs, G. P. Hawkins. "Come Out of the Kitchen.'* The Repertory Theatre was taxed to capacity on Thursday night when an acted play was produced by Mr. Roland Young. The play was "Come Out of tbe Kitchen," and though announced as a "reading," few of the players carried script, and it was dressed, set, and acted as a legitimate play. Alexa Rankin as *'the cook" added to her already large list of successes. Associated with her were Mrs. Harvey Gilberd ("Mammie"), Mrs. A. F. Woollams (Mrs. Falconer>, Margaret Stone (Betty), and Messrs. Colin Guscott, D. McCormick, G. Sainsbury, A. Lewis* C. S. Brown, and J. Woolcott. Dance Recital. One of the- most successful dance recitals staged at Turakina both as regards attendance ,and performance was that arranged by Miss Eva Matthews recently. Mrs. Freda Cunningham was at the piano, and every number went with a swing. Lola Bosher, a baby soprano, Shirley Mills, the Healey trio, Pat, June, and Ruth, Denis McClintock, and Shirley Richard were among the dance and song soloists who were greatly appreciated by the audience. Marton Junction Institute. Departing from its usual procedure, the September meeting of the Marton Junction Institute was rim by individual members, and was very enjoyable. Miss Emens read a paper on "The Mi-herals," dealing with bodybuilding foods. Miss Truman, of the Turakina Maori Girls* College, gave a demonstration of Maori weaving. She told of the customs in connection with , this interesting work. A musical competition arranged by Miss?' Neilson was ' won by Mrs. Young, and solos were given by Miss Neilson and Miss Winter. This afternoon conducted by individual members was a great success. Personals. Miss Valmai Fleming, a member of the Tasman Cup team, visited Mrs. B. Illston, of Silverhope, during the week, to play in the Palmerston North golf tournament. Mrs. and Miss Illston were also competitors. Miss Jean Hall has been the guest of Mr.- and Mrs. S. Fullerton-Smith at Ponkiore. After playing in the Palmerston North golf tournament, they both jeft for New Plymouth to take part in the tournament there. Mrs. £. M- Forsyth, of Taihape, left during the week for a short visit to Timaru before leaving for America On October 17. 7 Mrs; N. Marshall has returned to Patea from Napier. Mrs. C. Tustin, Wellington, is visiting Mrs. Webb-Jones. Mrs. E. Miller, Wellington, is taking up residence at Wanganui. Among the Wanganui golfets who are visiting New Plymouth for the golf tournament there are Mesdames R.". C. Cook, H. E. B. Newton, Collis Brown, and Misses J. Duncan and P. Bell. Mrs. W. McDonald, Mangamahu, is visiting: her sister, Mrs. J. Hanna, at Dannevirke. Miss F. Montgomerie Moore is visiting Hawke's Bay. Mrs. J. Muir, who has been the guest of Mrs. A. Burford, leaves at the weekend for Te Awamutu. Mr. and Mrs. W. Coghlan. Alice Springs, Central Australia, are on a tour of New Zealand and visited Wanganui this week.
