LYALL BAY CLUB

SUCCESSFUL SEASON

A large. attendance of members and supporters was present at the recent twenty-eighth annual meeting of the Lyall Bay Surf Life-saving Club. Mr. P. F..A. Coira, the club captain, presided. 'The past season must be regarded as one of the most outstanding during the history of not only your own club, but also of that of the surf life-saving movement generally, mainly on account of the progress in the establishment of new clubs and the wider application of the patrol system on beaches where no clubs are extant," he said. "As usual, Lyall Bay teams worthily represented the club at the New Zealand championships at Christchurch, where J. Blakeley brought honour to himself and to the club by winning the New Zealand Beltman's Championship, while the junior team also kept up the best traditions by winning the New Zealand championship for the second year in succession. As the oldest surf fife-saving club in New Zealand, it is pleasing to note that the club is now the possessor of a surf boat, thus bringing it into line with three other clubs of the Dominion."

A fitting tribute to the work performed for the life-saving movement by Mr. W. V. Griffen was the spontaneous applause which greeted the announcement that he had been elected a life member of the Lyali Bay Club. Speakers vied with each other in eulogising the work he has put into the movement, stressing in particular the great part he has played in building .up interest amongst secondary school boys and the club's junior teams.
