SURF LIFE-SAVING

»■■-> ——,

ANNUAL MEETINGS

MARANU! CLUB

Congratulations on the success enjoyed by the club during the past season, especially in championship events and inter-club contests, were extended by Mr. D. S. N. McCartney, a vice-president of the Maranui Surf and Life-saving Club, at the recent annual meeting of the club.

He said that the club had undoubtedly played a great part in lifesaving and swimming activities, and that the result was a credit to those responsible. The younger members had done well, and he appealed to them to continue their support, so that the club would go on from strength to strength. He emphasised the necessity of the younger members attending to training and drill. A club such as Maranui must be continuously engaged in building up its membership, and the executive looked to the younger members to carry on the club's tradition of efficiency and service. He urged the active members to train for swimming as distinct from surf work. The attainment of style was necessary before speed could be obtained. In seconding the adoption of the annual report, the club captain, Mr. E. B Hughes, said that during the past season there were more Maranui entries in competitions than ever before. A larger number of members than ever before had a chance in active competition, but even more members should have a chance in the future. \ In 1940 there would be a lot of work to do, and even greater keenness was needed for the club to make the best possible showing.

An organisation of younger members had raised* over £ 100 towards the purchase of a surf life-boat to replace the one which had been in service with the club for a number of years. It was intended, however, to make full provision for housing the boat before a new one was purchased. Several remits were discussed. It was decided that beginning this season all active members of the club should be required to complete a swimming test in smooth water of 440 yards, and that those doing so in under seven minutes should be classified as A grade swimmers for club purposes. OFFICERS ELECTED. The officers of the club for the ensuing year were elected as follows:— President, Mr. T. G. Queree; vicepresidents, Messrs. T. C. A. Hislop, L. Bridge, E. Deslandes, A. Howitt, K.
