SHANGHAI, October 5.

Japanese aeroplanes for the first time raided Chungking, the new wartime capital of China, killing six people. A Japanese landing party captured Panpishan fort, after landing under cover of warships and an artillery barIrage. Chinese trench mortars bombarded a Japanese transport on the Yangtze, killing two and wounding four Japanese. War correspondents reported from Chungking that the Japanese had lost 40,000 killed and 6000 wounded in two months' fighting on the banks of the Yangtze.
