THEFT CHARGE FAILS
RAILWAY GUARD ACQUITTED
(Received October 8, 11.50 ajn.)
BRISBANE, This Day.
After 59 witnesses had been heard, the Magistrate acquitted Francis Walsh of a charge of stealing £3000 from mail bags.
A cablegram received from Brisbane on September 1 stated:—Two mailbags containing £3000 in bank-notes were stolen from a Mount Isa train near Cloncurry last night. The money was for miners' pay at Mount Isa. The police believe that the robbery is linked with similar raids on trains in 1926 and 1931. Last night's robbery was not discovered until the train's arrival at its destination. Subsequently Walsh, a railway guard, was charged with the theft.
