HITCH OCCURS
SUDETENLAND ZONE
DETERMINING GERMAN
AREAS
POPULATION BASIS
REPORTED SETTLEMENT
(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received October 6,11.50 a.m.) BERLIN, October 5.
A hitch has occurred in connection with the international commission regarding the Sudetenland zone to be handed over on October 10. It is understood that agreement so far has been difficult, as the Germans have taken a most emphatic stand. The Berlin correspondent of the British United Press says it is stated semi-officially that Germany is ask- [ ing that the 1918 population figures i sball be the basis of the determina[tion of the predominantly German areas outside the four specified zones. It is maintained that the Munich agreement was to "correct the injustices suffered by the Sudetens since 1918." Therefore no solution which overlooked the areas which the Czechs have forcibly settled with their own people since 1918 would permit of the establishment of normal friendly relations between Berlin and Prague. The settlement must eliminate the possibility of prejudicing German-Czech relations, which cannot be achieved if the Czech influence in this territory is overlooked. Reuters' Berlin correspondent later reported that the Commission of Ambassadors had agreed upon the predominantly German area .in Czechoslovakia which is to be occupied by the Germans on October 10, and in which there is a German majority of 51 per cent.
It is officially stated that troops under General yon Reichenau entered the last sector of the third zone of the Sudetenland at 8 a.m. today. Herr Hitler is expected back in Berlin this afternoon and will speak at the opening of the winter relief campaign at the Sports Palace in the evening.
