GLADIOLI

The conns of these may be planted at frequent intervals until the middle of next month to provide a succession of blooms. Deep, loamy soil that has been well worked, of a sandy rather than a clayey nature, suits gladioli best. These flowers are very effective if planted in groups of five or more of the same variety in the mixed border. If they are to be grown in rows, nine inches to a foot should be allowed between the plants according to the strength of the variety, and the rows should be two feet apart. Plant from three to four inches deep; if the soil is heavy, cold, and wet, place some coarse sand under and around each conn. . This will greatly facilitate lifting during autumn. Since the introduction of gladiolus primulinus a very large number of charming hybrids have been raised, embracing a wide range of colours, and all of these aye extremely useful for garden purposes as well as for cutting. * Gladioli require plenty of water, especially during flowering. A good soaking of water once a week will do more good than mere sprinklings at more frequent intervals, as the roots are fairly deep.
