Luke formally pleaded not guilty to enable evidence of character to be adduced. Counsel related that Luke was ;■ years ago .addicted to liquor but reX l: formed and became a prominent Meth- ;" odist Church worker in Dunedin, Hastings, and Palmerston North. Shortly after he came to Blenheim he lost his wife, which resulted in his having a breakdown. His employers gave him a holiday, but on his return he still suffered from insomnia. On the day 'of..his arrest he decided to have one drink in the hope of relieving his nerves, but unfortunately had several drinks before attempting to drive home. Special circumstances were pleaded as a reason for retention of his licence, which was essential to his emj-loyment.
