MARKET CONDITIONS

FRUIT AND VEGETABLES

The Director of the Horticulture Division of the" Department of Agriculture has received the following report from the fruit inspector (Mr. E. T. Taylor) on the condition of locallygrown fruit and vegetables in Wellington shops and auction rooms and the market conditions for September:—

During the month the market was well supplied with apples and pears, though many lines were found to be of inferior quality. Towards the end of the period being reported on the supply of lemons increased considerably, and some very fine quality fruit was marketed. Vegetables, both green and root, were in good supply, with green peas land good quality pumpkins in good demand. Rhubarb arrived in increased quantities. Old potatoes were in heavy supply, and the quality and conditions of most lines were satisfactory. The following is a range of prices realised during the month:—-Apples, Delicious 2s 3d to 8s 9d per case, Stunners 2s to 7s 9d, Granny Smith 4s 6d to 8s 6d, Washington 2s to 6s, Rome Beauty 5s to 7s,* Dougherty 2s to ss, Ballarats 2s. 6d to 5s 9d, Dunns 3s 6d to 4s 6d; pears, Winter Coles 4s to 8s 6d, Winter Nelis 4s 6d to 7s, P. Barry, 5s 6d to 9s 6d, VicaTS 2s 9d to 3s 6d, Beurre Diel 5s to 5s 6d; lemons, 5s to 12s; celery, 12s to 21s; sprouts, 7s to 225; lettuce, choice 5s to 13s, others Is to 3s; leeks, 8s to 15s; spinach, 4s to lis 6d; marrows, 2s 6d to 5s 3d; silver beet, 5s to 8s; beetroot, 3s to 8s; parsnips, 4s to 14s; swedes, 3s to 10s 6d; carrots, 2s to 9s; cauliflowers, choice 8s to 14s, others 2s 6d to 7s per sack; cabbage, Savoy 7s to 13s 6d, spring 2s to 7s; potatoes, old 4s to 6s per cwt, new l£d to 3d per lb.
