SEAMEN'S VOTES
An increase of some hundreds in the votes cast by members of the crews of coastal vessels is expected to result from, the new provision enabling these men to vote as absentees instead of their being required as previously to obtain the special seamen's qualification.
At the last election 1523 seamen's votes were cast, but there were some hundreds of seamen who were unable to vote then because they had not obtained the special qualification. There is also the probability that account will have to be taken of naval ratings in the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy, which should bring the total vote to well in excess of 2000. No accurate figures giving the total number of seamen entitled to vote are available.
The seamen will vote as absentees in the particular electorates where their homes are situated when they are on shore.
