SUCCESSFUL PIANIST
WAIROA GIRL IN LONDON
Miss Edith Astall, Wairoa, came to England in 1935 on an Associated Board Scholarship offered for two years in the first instance, states "The Post's" London representative. This scholarship has since been extended for a third and fourth year. I» 1937 she took the diploma of A.R.C.M. for pianoforte performance and won the Chappell medal for piano in the same year. ' Her principal instrument is the piano, which she studied under Mr. Marmaduke Barton from 1935 until his death last July. Her second instrument is the violin, which she has been studying under Arthur Bent.
Since taking her A.R.C.M., Miss Astall has been devoting her attention to solo and two-piano work, and in May, with Miss J. Cameron, she took part in a two-piano recital at the Royal College of Music. Since then she has broadcast a solo recital on the Empire short-wave transmission to Australia and New Zealand, and a two-piano recital with Miss Cameron to Canada. She was engaged to give a further solo recital to New Zealand and Australia on September 18, and again in a performance of two-piano works on October 9. A two-piano recital at Leighton House is also proposed for October or November. Miss Astall has been enjoying a fortnight in Paris, and she divided the other two weeks of her holiday between Somerset and Wiltshire. Miss Astall expects to be in New Zealand for the Centenary in 1940.
