Defaulter, who finished up his juvenile season with a sequence of seven wins, will attempt to continue his unbroken run in the Electric Handicap at Dunedin tomorrow. L. J. Ellis expects to leave hospital in Timaru in a week's time. He has made a speedier recovery than had earlier been anticipated, but is not likely to do any race riding until Christmas.
Happy Landing, who is in some early favour as a lightweight prospect for the New Zealand Cup, will be ridden by the apprentice C. Cameron in the Mitchelson Cup at Auckland pn Saturday. Cameron rode him to'success recently at Foxton.
P. Atkins will ride at Hastings on Friday,. but will leave for Auckland the same evening. A. Lord will pilot Lovelilt at Hastings on Friday and he will ride Salon and Middle at Auckland on Saturday. Foalings to the Gainsborough horse Leighon this season include colts from Rule Britannia, Lady Pym ? and Hilton Gorse, and fillies from Leisure, Habit, and Acora.
The veteran Hawke's Bay trainer Mr. Robert Gooseman celebrated his 87th birthday this week. Some of the owners for whom he trained include Sir W. R. Russell, Sir George Hunter, Messrs. J. Watt, E. J. Watt, T. H. Lowry, F. Armstrong, James Armstrong, H. M. Campbell, Paul Hunter, and Henry Gaisford.
A telephone has been installed in the trainers' room at Riccarton, and it should prove a great convenience during working hours. A. G. Parsons, who was kicked by Milford when at. the post for the Geraldine Cup, which he just failed to win on Wine Card, had his leg placed in splints, and he was unable to ride again at the meeting. The newly-appointed stipendiary steward, Mr. C. F. Hartland, fined three different owners £1 each for parading their horses in wrong colours at the Geraldine Meeting. The only excuse that was offered in each case was that the livery had been forgotten. Razzle Dazzle and Gold Light, two great mares in their day, are to be mated this season with Woodend. Both are well up in years, and have failed to breed in recent seasons. They will be turned out with the Lemberg horse. According to a Southland report Set Sail has produced a filly by Man's Pal. Her owner. Dr. J. E. Rogers, of Gore, has been anxious to secure a colt from her, but so far has been unable to do so. This is the fifth filly she has produced.
Strong, stout of heart, and more dependable than most members of her sex, Rockfel ranks as the leader of the racing fillies in England this year. Indeed, she has to accomplish little more to advance to the same high level as Quashed, winner of the Ascot Gold Cup for Lord Stanley.
Among the mares to be mated with Dolomite this season are Yarrawin, Jaffna, Gold Money, Quinola, High Finance, The Vamp, Queen of the Earth, Dark Princess, Big Bertha, Sweet Musk, Elysian Lady, Assume, Queen Emerald, Laguna Park, and Kirima.
