WOOL IN SYDNEY
STRONG COMPETITION
(By Telegraph—Press Assn.—CopyrlghtJ SYDNEY, October 4. At the wool sales today 11,208 bales were offered and^ 10,646 sold, also 816 privately. Strong competition came from Yorkshire, the Continent, and Japan. Values were very firm. Greasy merino made 16Jd. , ' The average price of wool last week I was £12 9s lid a bale, or 9.6 d a lb. Winchcombe, Carson, and Co., v Sydney, report that shearing is progressing apace in New South Wales and is now proceeding in the inner districts of the State. Receipts indicate that smaller quantities of wool are being shorn in practically all districts. The quantity of wool received in Sydney shows a decrease of approximately 24 per cent, compared with a year before. If a reduction of 20 per cent, for the season occurs in the arrivals in Sydney, it will mean a decrease of 234,600 bales and that quantity would offset the total carry-over for the whole of Australia at June 30 last. A heavy reduction has also been experienced in the quantity received in Victoria. It is evident, therefore, that the decrease in the size of the Australian clip will be greater than was anticipated.
