METAL-WORKERS' ASSIST-
ANTS
Wages, for Wellington metal-, workers' assistants have been fixed by the Court of Arbitration in an award, issued today at a figure which bears the same relation to the Court's standard rates as prevailed in 1931. The minimum rate was fixed at 2s 7d an hour, workers employed doing oxy-acetylene or any form of electric welding other than assisting to be paid Is 6d a day extra. Youths' wages range from 20s to 70s a week. Provision is made for special rates for various conditions of work. Overtime is to be paid for at the rate of time and a half for the first four hours and double time thereafter.
The award fixes a 40-hour five day week, with a 44-Jiour SJ-day week for ship-repair workers. Provision is made for shift work. Ten recognised holidays without deduction from pay are allowed.
The wages clauses of the award are retrospective to May 9, and the award is to continue in force until May 9, 1940.
