MAN ARRESTED
ROWDY MEETING
CANDIDATE'S ORDEAL
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, October 3.
A man was arrested after scenes strongly reminiscent of bygone election times were staged at -the Jubilee Hall^ Kingsland, tonight during and after a meeting held by the National candidate for Eden, Mr. D. Pool.
Immediately he stepped on to the stage he was greeted with hooting and booing, stamping of feet, and ironic laughter. After the meeting Labour supporters of the arrested man crowded round Mr. and Mrs. Pool shouting execrations and shaking their fists. A bodyguard of police had some difficulty in keeping the demonstrators back.
Three times during the meeting the chairman, Mr. H. A. Anderson, Mayor of Mount Albert, appealed to the audience for fair play, but with little effect. The hall was packed and outside about 200 people listened to the speech through loud-speakers.
Mr. Pool continued gamely through a; fairly consistent barrage of what obviously was organised heckling, and when the Labour element left the hall in sympathy with the man ejected by the police, Mr. Pool continued his speech to the remaining 150, who constituted what was left of his original audience. Many of those who remained went to him at the close and congratulated him.
