AMATEUR ATHLETICS
WEST INDIES TEAM
MAY APPEAR.AT BASIN
-The three coloured- athletes from Trinidad, who with their, manager, Mr. M. E. L. Joseph, were in Wellington last weekend, en route to compete at the British Empire Games in ' Sydney, are "due to return to ■Wellington on their way back home-after the Games. Their shipping schedules provide / ( for their ■arrival-here with members of the New, Zealand team from Sydney on February. 21 and for ■ them to remain / here until/the Friday ,of .that'week and .possibly., the Saturday. - :
;, When",they learned of this: Mr. F.Bond, chairman, and other members of the Wellington Centre, at once appreciated the wonderful opportunity' that was presented of enabling the Wellington public to see these athletes in action at Wellington. Accordingly, preliminary steps have been taken with a view to the team competing at an electric light meeting at the Basin Reserve on Wednesday night, February 23. if,-however,, the ship in which they are to;return fr^m New Zealand to the West Indies,, should be delayed and it'isi possible for the team to be here on the Saturday, the chances are that, in place of the electric light meeting, they will be invited to compete at the' Wellington provincial championship meeting,, to be held on : the Saturday at the Basin Reserve. At whichever meeting they compete the members of the team should prove a big attraction. Each has good performances to his credit and their courtesy and gratefulness for anything, that was done for them made a deep impression upon'the Wellington Centre officials who were in contact with them during their short stay here over the weekend The members of the team' are J ., Ashmead (jumper* J. N Cumberbatch (sprinter), and N. Stanford (middle--distance runner).
