CONSTITUTIONAL LEAGUE

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—This Constitutional League: do we understand that it is going to be a new party, despite its denial of such an aim? One is led to believe such to be so,' particuarly as enthuiasts like "March on the League" and "Imperial Patriot" writes paeans of praise for the league, and diatribes against the "die-hard Tories." The epithet, to my mind, obviously refers to the National Party, as your correspondent quotes it as being the only alternative to the present Government. May I ask your correspondent to tell us what is the meaning of his expression "die-hard Tory," because, according to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, as far back as 1911 New Zealand is quoted as being a first-class example of a Socialistic country. Can we possibly have "diehard Tories" still extant under such circumstances? One would feel that as we grow up under such an environment, it must be very rare for us to find the specimen our correspondent cites as comprising the Opposition. Your correspondent- commends the Constitutional League and its policy, as being an alternative to the National Party, but the Constitutional League tells us it is out to help the opponents of democracy. What is it all about? Is the Constitutional League another of the many mushroom movements which flourish and die in New Zealand, or is it able to withstand thfc contumely which will fall on it if it helps to combat Labour? Perhaps we, the midway electors, might reasonably ask if the Constitutional League is true to its colours, or does it mean, by subterfuge, to oppose the National Party in its battle against organised Labour?—l am, etc., . SOLON.
