At the request of Senator Vahdenberg, the Commerce anot Committees of the Senate hare agreed to demand from the Labourf Department a full and immediate report on the citizenship and activitie^ of Mr. H. Bridges, the Labour Jepder, whose name figured in the evidqnce heard by the committees regarding: Pacific Coast disturbances in connection with an investigation' of labour conditions' in the merchant marine. i .'. ■
A-message on January*!) stated: The Mayor of/Portland, Oregon, Mr. Carson, testifying before tha Senate Commerce Committee,. expressed annoyance with Mr/ Harry Bridges, whom he described as an "Australian ■■ alien." Mr. Bridges appeared ;in Portland several times and criticised the city's government: Mr. Carson} declared that since Mr. Bridges was not an American citizen he had no rfjght to do so. Labour disorders in *the> shipping industry had" cost Portland! 1,000,000,000 dollars during the past tjtiree years.
