TURF NEWS IN BRIEF

There are only nine Trentham horses among the first day's acceptors for Pahiatua. Parry ran well enough an his one start at Trentham to have a chance in the highweight at Pahiatua. Royal Romance, who has not raced since he had a bad run at Levin in November,'is likely to be suited by conditions at Pahiatua this week. The three-year-old Siegfried filly Flame Queen, bred and raced by Mr. W. J. Wood, of Waipawa, was sold last week to the Riccartoru trainer S. Barr. . .

Though the hard tracks found Maestro unable to hit out during the holidays, he ran nearer his right form at Ashhurst, and the rain since should give him his opportunity at Pahiatua.

The Trentham trainer H. B. Lorigan rarely visits Pahiatua without collecting some of the spoils, and for this year he has Sunny Blonde, Happy Heels, Twenty Grand, and Diareus engaged.

Though Segra failed in his two early starts at Awapuni over the holidays, he may play a more prominent part in his races at Pahiatua. This juvenile is a half-brother by Siegfried to Jenny Diver and McHeath, so he comes from excellent stock.

Mrs. C. Haldane, who bought the Defoe—Golden Streak filly for 250gs at the supplementary sales last Friday, has. since also bought the Defoe— Valquette colt passed in at the sales for 200gs and a contingency. Owing to a poisoned leg, C. G. Goulsbro1 was unable to ride on the second and third days of the Wellington Racing Club's Meeting last week. Goulsbro', however, expects to be recovered in time to fulfil engagements at the Takapuna Jockey Club's Meeting at Ellerslie next Saturday and Monday. .

According to Australian papers, the King's Cup, which will be run at Launceston (Tasmania) next month, has drawn a large entry, but class is sadly lacking, and it is (juite possible that the starter will have a small field to dispatch. Considering the stake, of £1000, and the magnificent trophy, donated by his Majesty the King, the response was most disappointing.

sound. KaHikatoa, another 0/ the field, ran a second to Slippery recently at Hastings, so there is stiJl a chance that he might stage a come-back after his several seasons of! the scene. Siinny Blonde is a hack with an earlier engagement, but i£ she takes her place here she has sufficient brilliance to carry this lot along, though there still remains the question whether she will hang on to the end of the seven furlongs against challenges from the like of Pakanui and Lone Raider.
