LIMIT BAGS

TROUT AT ROTORUA

Although the rain which fell on Sunday night and on Monday may alter conditions which had prevailed for some few weeks, very large numbers of trout have been taken from the mouths of spring-fed streams flowing into Lake Rotorua, states a Rotorua correspondent. Every day there have been large congregations of anglers at Waiteti, Awahou, and Hamurana, and anglers fishing in these places for any length of tima have almost invariably taken limit bags.

It is computed that in one evening as many as five hundred trout Were taken out of the water at Awahou alone.

The majority of fish, taken, when cleaned, have been % found to be empty, indicating that unusually high lake temperatures have stopped the fish feeding.

The majority of the fish are being taken at night, when a considerable number of heavy brown trout are also being caught.

In other lakes in the district. very few fish have been caught for the past six weeks, and these conditions appear likely to continue until the hot weather moderates.

Misgivings are being expressed regarding the effect of tiie tremendous j I levy which is being made upon Rotorua trout owing to continual fishing at stream mouths, where the average number of rods during the day and evening is in the vicinity of twentythree. Years ago. when similar conditions were experienced, .it was considered that the large number of trout taken out adversely affected fishing conditions during the following two seasons. This year the hot spell, has been even more prolonged than on that occasion, and a larger number of anglers has been operating.
