KARORI CEMETERY

A NEW-NAME

A CHANGE DESIRABLE

' A recommendation was. made to the City Council by the health and cemeteries committee last evening that | the Karorl Cemetery should be renamed the "Western Cemetery." The chairman of the committee, Councillor C. H. Chapman, M.P., said that a number of Karori residents had asked that the name should be changed, for they thought that the close association of names of the suburb and of the cemetery had an adverse effect upon property values. Councillor M. F. Luckie said that he did not think that "Western Cemetery" was a suitable name, for it still gave a close association with the western suburbs. He suggested that a name having no such associations should be chosen. Councillor J. Burns said that .the Karori people had no objection to "western." WKy not call it "Wellington Cemetery"? Councillors H. A. Huggins and R. A. , Wright thought that "Wellington Cemetery" would be more suitable. The Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop) said that there was a possibility that complications might arise, for the Bolton Street Cemetery was officially "Wellington Cemetery." He thought that it should be possible to find a suitable name which would remove the objections of the Karori people. Councillor Chapman said that the committee would consider the question further, and would be pleased to receive suggestions.
