LIQUOR AT BALL
ACTION BY POLICE
CONFISCATION ALLEGED
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
WHANGAREI, This Day.
Soon after the commencement of the Hukatere returned soldiers' ball on Wednesday evening a posse of police arrived and, it is alleged, confiscated a dozen large bottles of beer arid a similar number of bottles of lemonade.
Mr. P. Stratford, president of the Otamatea R.S.A., said he was at a loss to understand the action of the authorities, as the parent body had never heard of anything in the nature of a complaint concerning the conduct of the ball. "You cannot go to a function of this nature anywhere in New Zealand and not see claret cup provided for dancers," he said. From what he was told, said Mr. Stratford, the liquor allegedly confiscated was the private property of members of the committee. The Otamatea association would stand behind the committee in any action taken.
