KILBIRNIE CARD EVENING
The social committee of the Kilbirnie auxiliary of the Returned Soldiers' Association entertained a large.gathering at the weekly card.evening. Prizes for "500" were awarded to Mrs. M. C. McLeod and Mr. H. Milsorri, while the best score card for bridge was returned- ■by Mrs. Phillips and. Mr. J. S. Boudry. : Special prizes • were won by Mrs. H. Q. Bruce and Mrs. J. MacClatchy. During the supper interval the president of the ladies' committee, Mrs. H. Q. Bruce, announced the intention of the ladies to stage another concert, and also reminded those present of the card afternoon to be held this week. Mr. -D. Gunn (chairman of the auxiliary) thanked all those present for their attendance.

In order to see their work, .the women of the .'working classes must perforce go unveiled. Theirs was a strenuous day—drawing water/gathering fuel,'and grinding the corn, to make the flat cakes which; were the staple food; Their husbands,'mean* while; sat around inthe surt. At night the women were locked up in their homes, while the' men fraquented the streets and restaurants, which never closed. Large' numbers of police patrolled the city during the night, constantly blowing shrill whistles to announce their'presence;'- 'Despite this vigilance no\,bne ever trayelled beyond the 'city -after nightfall, for fear of marauding bands of Bedouins." / ' .
'. Miss Mills showed a'beautiful white and gold hood which "had belonged to a sheik? also a wonderful brown sugar bowl studded with gejns, arid some straw from a very ancient bower in the desert hear the site of ancient Babylon, which was supposed to be about 4500 years old.
Thanks were given to the speaker for her address, and it • was announced that the July meeting'of, the branch would take the form of: a social after-; noon to celebrate the fourth birthday. St. James's Club. . • .'■•
After a ten years' interim since its last dance, St. James Young Men's Club held a very enthusiastic and successful function last night. Ping-pong and'billiards lost their attraction in face of the brightly decorated Hall, the lilt of ■the orchestra, and the' whirl of dainty frocks. Mr. G. Martin acted as M.C.,. and' Mr. A. Lawn Tennis Dance. >v Twenty-one clubs affiliated to "the Hutt Valley Lawn Tennis Sub-associa-tion were represented on Tuesday night at the annual dance of the association in the1 Horticultural Hall, Lower Hutt. It was a particularly bright occasion, for not only did the=presentation by Sir Alexander Roberts take place of the shields, cups, and trophies.for the 1936-37 season, but also the "ceremony of crowning the carnival queen—Miss Olive McMillan. Miss McMillan, who represented the southern section of the H.V.L.T.S.A., "wore "a handsome gown of cream satin, and was "attended by the three other candidates, Mrs. Keillor (oyster satin), Miss O'Neill, and/Miss Blackmore: The committee: comprised: Chairman, : Mr. G. -Winter;' secretary, Mr. A.
