BOWLERS DO WELL

NEW ZEALAND V. DERBY

TOURING BATSMEN FAIL

FIRST DAY'S PLAY

(From the Special Correspondent of the United Press Association.) DERBY, June 5. The New Zealand cricket team accomplished a creditable performance in dismissing Derbyshire in four hours on a good wicket today for 241 runs. The county was champion last year and is sixth on the table this year. New Zealand's score at stumps was 151 for nine wickets. The weather was fine. ' The Derbyshire team included L. F. Townsend, A. E. Alderman, D. Smith T. S. Worthington, T. B. Mitchell, and W. Copson, all men who have coached or toured in the Dominion. The county scored quickly before lunch, but in the afternoon the bowlers were predominant. Cowie, who took an early wicket with a ball that swung away, had another of his purple patches, capturing three for 1 in four overs, including a good catch on the leg side by the wicketkeeper, TindiU. VIVIAN'S BOWLSNG. Page showed shrewdness in his slow to medium-pace bowling, his victims being leading batsmen. Vivian cleverly flighted slow balls into the breeze, showing his most impressive form of the tour. Four or five wickets would not have been a flattering reward.' A troublesome partnership for the eighth wicket was broken by a typically swift throw-in by Wallace. The crowd of 5000 saw the tourists troubled by probably the strongest county attack in England. Kerr batted patiently and Wallace brightly. All the players were uncertain facing the breaks of Mitchell till the advent of Page, who looked as if he might have saved the situation if only 'he had found a partner to stay with him.
