CHILLY WEEKEND

SNOW ON THE HILLS

Winter began in earnest on Saturday afternoon when a bitterly cold southerly wind brought with it hail, snow, and rain. More snow fell in some of the higher suburbs than has been the case for some years, the flakes being large. In the Hutt Valley heavy hail fell for a short time, but no snow, although the tops of the surrounding hills ■ were powdered. The coating of snow on the hills, more especially on those overlooking Ngaio and Karori, made a pleasing sight, but most of it had disappeared by yesterday evening,

Yesterday was a brilliantly fine day —cold, but with very little wind.
