EASTBOURNE V. UNIVERSITY
The boisterous weather spoiled what promised to be a most entertaining game when the promoted University team visited Eastbourne to try conclusions with a strong home fifteen. The first few minutes of play gave indications of tall scoring, as after Eastbourne had started the game the return kick was fumbled and a rush by University ended in a try by Edgley. Eastbourne immediately took the lead. Berridge intercepted a University pass and handed the ball to McMillan, who scored between the posts, Cx-isp adding the extra points. Undismayed, the University team fought hard, especially in the forwards, where Burke and Bade were a tower of strength. Missen (University) had a good share of the ball from the scrums, and his backs endeavoured to open up play. The greasy ball was, however, a great handicap, and mistakes were made, of xvhich the more experienced Eastbourne team took full advantage. A further try was scored in the first spell, Griffiths touching down for Eastbourne after a fine burst by Fleming. Crisp converted. The second spell provided typical wet-weather football, Eastbourne having rather the better of the play as a result of fast play by their forwards, who were breaking very quickly from the scrums and preventing the University fifteen from making much headway. When Eastbourne were penalised on the University line _ the kick was neatly fielded by Berridge, who drop-kicked a fine goal. Another forward rush by Eastbourne resulted in Farmer scoring a try. Although University persisted to the end of the game, they failed to add to their first-minute score, and the final score was: Eastbourne 17, University 3. Mr. S. Morris was the referee.
