ALICE IN WONDERLAND
Princess Beatrice's second edition copy of "Alice in Wonderland" was sold- fo. £320 to Messrs. Sawyer at Sotheby's recently, says the "Manchester Guardian." The representative of Dr. Rosenbach, of Philadelphia, stopped bidding at £300. Actually,, there was no first edition of "Alice," for there was a dispute over the illustrations ■ and the first edition was withdrawn. Those who had copies were asked to return them, and the Princess was among those who did so. The first copy, issued in 1865, was sent to Alice Liddell, the original of Alice, who later became Mrs. Hargreaves. The second copy went, to Queen Victoria for . her youngest daughter Beatrice. In 1866 "Alice" came out without any disagreement, and the-Princess received, a second edition bound in white vellum. Mrs. Hargreaves's copy, signed by Lewis Carroll'; was sold for £1500.
