NEW ZEALAND'S DAY

NORTHANTS MATCH

FINE DISPLAY ALL ROUND

JAMES SAVES COUNTY

(From the Special Representative of the United Press Association.)

(Received June 4, 11 a.m.)

NORTHAMPTON, June 3.

The New Zealand cricketers took all the honours on the second day of the match against. Northamptonshire, forcing the county to struggle hard to avoid a follow-on and then showing some of the most satisfying batting form of the tour. In reply to New Zealand's score of 334, Northamptonshire, wjiose overnight score was 24 for two wickets, made 185, to which the former New Zealander, Ken James, contributed 80. At stumps New Zealand had scored 230 for three wickets in the second innings.

Dunning bowled swingers to excellent effect, once having four wickets for 18 runs. Three of his victims were caught in the slips and one stumped, the ball rebounding from the wicketkeeper. James, who saved Northamptonshire from a total collapse, played an innings comparable to his form in New Zealand. He drove with great power, hitting a dozen 4's. Gallichan's slows bothered the batsmen and Donnelly was used to break a troublesome partnership. Roberts was persevering but had little luck. The fielding was enthusiastic and good catches were taken by Weir, Lamason. and Tindill. New Zealand rattled on the runs in the second innings, batting under three hours. Kerr glided and cut the fast bowlers beautifully, occasionally driving and hooking powerfully. He hit nine 4's in a brilliant display. The consistent Wallace again played a workmanlike innings, hitting five 4's. Carson found his form, which has been misplaced since the first match, heavily pasting all the bowlers and hitting five 4's and seven 2's, being especially severe on the leg side. Page confidently assisted him to add 60 runs in the last 30 minutes in the failing light. Details: — NEW ZEALAND.
