In the House of Commons this aftei> noon the Chancellor of the Exchequer was asked to give the same assurance as was given by his predecessor that the country would not return to the gold standard system until he was satisfied that the causes which brought about the downfall of the gold standard in 1931 were removed and not likely to recur.
