FARM PRODUCE
SUPPLIES KEEP UP
: The wet weather experienced during the spring and summer has led to a good growth in farm produce, and consequently supplies of vegetables and fruit are well up to the demand in Wellington at the present time. The destruction of much of the Hawke's Bay fruit crop by frost last spring has led* to an improvement in apple prices, present returns being better than the returns for the last two or three seasons. Pears have also been" reduced in number by frost destruction, and they are in short supply. Another outcome of the frosts is the increase in the amount of lower-grade apples sent to market, many cases of apples being offered that would not have found a market a year ago.
The demand for oranges is not great. and retailers are not buying in large quantities. The majority of those offering are from the Islands, but there are still some California!! oranges awaiting buyers. These are from the shipment that was carried on to Australia from Auckland, and the Importers are selling them at-a-loss.
