- "This offence is becoming, too common,": said Mr. W. R. McKean,1 S.M., when William Lounden Couper, steward, aged 20, pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court today to ''a charge of deserting the shin Waimana .at Auckland on March 12.' __ ■ -• A representative' of the Shaw Savill arid Albion Shipping Company said, the companies ..were being put, to much trouble by desertions. The departure of ships was frequently delayed while substitutes for deserters were .sought. ■ ■••Counsel'said that the accused- was very young, and came 'from-. England. He was. notvery./happy.on the "ship and seemed to have.found new ties in New Zealand-. ■ ■ •■■■ - ■
"The accused has an excellent character," said counsel. "He merely acted in a youth's impetuous way of doing things. -Itt spite of the unemployment, he got a job the day after'he deserted and has been working ever since." ■ The Magistrate said the only thing to do was-to,, sentence the (accused to imprisonment: :-,THeJ term.:was 21 days.
