TOURING CRICKETERS
FINE INNINGS BY WALLACE
COSTLY DECLARATION
(By the Special Correspondent of the United Press Association.) (Received June 2, 10 a.m.)
MANCHESTER, June 1
Declaring their second innings closed at ia stage which gave Lancashire two and a half hours to make 196 runs, the .New Zealand cricketers were defeated by eight wickets when the match was concluded at the Old Traffqrd ground today. New Zealand's score was 227 for six wickets when the closure was applied in the second innings, and Lancashire hit up the required runs for the loss of only two wickets.
Rain interrupted play for a quarter of an hour this morning, but the wicket was in good order. The attendance was only a few hundreds, Tuesday being an off-day for cricket in Manchester.
The New Zealanders showed more^ confidence and aggression in their batting today, scoring freely. The overnight score was 13 for one wicket, and Hadlee and Moloney carefully took the score to 53. Donnelly then came in and enterprisingly forced the pace, hitting four 4's and a 3, scoring a run a minute. While Hadlee pursued his unhurried way Wallace attacked the bowling with vigour and grace, piercing the field with well-placed and well-timed strokes. He hit ten 4's in his first 50 and seventeen 4's altogether. His driving and hooking were a treat, to watch. ' HADLEE'S PATIENCE. Hadlee batted with great. patience, s/aying for two and a half hours while 172 runs were compiled. The declaration left the county two and a half hours to make 196 runs. A catch at silly niid-on gave a wicket in the first over to Cowie, but Paynter'and Iddon became set and rattled on 113 runs in 75 minutes before a good catch was made at cover by Wallace. ' Iddon and Oldfield, hitting almost every ball, maintained the scoring pace. Boberts and Weir were relied on, mainly to keep the scoring down. Two catches were dripped in one over from the former. Cowie was used for short spells and Donnelly was given a trial late in the innings. Page, bowling with design, succeeded in breaking the second-wicket partnership. Details:— NEW ZEALAND.
