THE RED CROSS
NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL
A meeting of the council of the New Zealand Red Cross Society was held last week, and was attended by delegates from Auckland, Hawke's Bay, Taranaki, Manawatu, Wellington, West Coast, Marlborough, Canterbury, and Dunedin.
It was reported that a visit is expected from Mr. de Gielgud, Under-Secretary-General of the League of Red Cross Societies, Paris, in September. He will be met in Auckland, where a public meeting will be held, and will meet the local Red Cross executive there, after which he will proceed to Wellington to meet the council of the Red Cross. A public meeting will be held in Wellington, after which Mr. de Gielgud will travel through New Zealand meeting the various executives and addressing public meetings.
The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted. Dr. Elizabeth Gunn, in an address, eulogised the work of the Junior Red Cross; Mrs. Kelso expressed appreciation of the work- done on behalf of the organisation by the Women's Institutes, and Mrs. Angus spoke in appreciation of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union. •
Major Abel reported that the Government had agreed to supply films of New Zealand for use in connection with, the scheme of supplying educative films to the Junior Red Cross in Czechoslovakia. The council expressed its thanks to the Government for its co-operation in this matter.
The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted:—President, Mrs. T. H. Lowry; chairman Dominion executive, Dr. Alexander Gillies; Dominion executive, Lady Myers, Sir Alexander Roberts. Mrs. Harvey, Messrs. L O. H. Tripp, J. Abel, J. I. Goldsmith, I. J. Bridger, C. J. Ronaldspn, T. McNab; joint council, Lady Wigram, Mrs. 1. H. Lowry, Miss E. M. King, Sir Alexander Roberts, Dr." A. Gillies, Major Abel, Messrs. I. J. Bridger, J. T. Spears, C. J. Ronaldson, T. McNab, I. J. Goldsmith, E. C. Hale; lion, solicitor, Mr. Alex. Jessep; hon. auditors, Messrs. "Watkins, Hull, Wheeler, and Johnston. Thank 3 were expressed to the president, and to Major Abel, the retiring chairman, for their services to the society.
