COUNTRY GIRLS

AUCKLAND'S WEEK

I Auckland has followed up the excellent idea which originated in the south and was carried' out' in Christchurch, whereby country .girls, selected by the W.D.F.U. 'in -its different branches in the South. Island, were invited to the city for a week and' shown a great many things not within their reach in the country. • . :

The inaugural gathering was arranged in Auckland by the Waitemata Provincial executive of the W.D.F.U. and the Auckland Federation of Women's Institutes combined, and proceedings began by a reception held by the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall. The girls, 71 in- number, met first at the Y.W.C.A.,-where they were welcomed by Mrs. Noel Adams and Mrs. Stanley i Phillips, presidents of the two organisations respectively. Sir Ernest Davis welcomed the girls cordially:to Auckland city, and said how glad he was to be able to do anything for the two organisations whose work was so useful; He hoped the week would be one of both profit and pleasure. Tea was served from a long table in the, Concert-Chamber, and the tables I were charmingly decorated with masses of yellow chrysanthemums and green I foliage. In the evening the girls met in the Victoria League rooms, where they were. addressed by Mr. W. ■J. Shaw on "The Empire," and an amusing programme was submitted as well.
