PLUNKET BALL
PRELIMINARY MEETING
The Mayor, Mr. T.-C. A. Hislop, presided over a large and enthusiastic meeting of the Plunket Society • committee in the Palm Lounge of the Hotel St. George yesterday, to make arrangements for the Punket Ball in the Town Hall on July 9.
Mr. Hislop praised the excellent work done for the community by the Pliinket Society, and said he hoped that the ball this year would excel any previous achU/ement of the society. He stressed the need the Plunket. Society was experiencing for funds. The rise in the cost of living had greatly increased the society's expenses. He urged all members to do their utmost to make the ball an outstanding success and so further the good work being done.
Mrs. Jowett (president of the Plunket Society) expressed her gratitude to all" the members 'for so willingly giving their time to ensure the'success of the function, which was one of the main social events of the year. The society was to be honoured at the ball by the presence of his Excellency the
Governor-General, Lord Galway, but owing to the absence of Lady Galway in.England there would not be any presentation of debutantes this year. It was suggested, however, that girls should be encouraged to "come out" at the ball when an opportunity would be afforded them to take the floor by themselves for part of a dance, so that they might be distinguished from the other dancers..
A suggestion':was also made that a special alcove and also a special supper table should be provided for the debutantes and their partners.
■■' It was decided, on the suggestion of Mrs. Jowett,,who has the decorations for the ball entirely in her hands, to have a "Blue Bird Ball" this year, and to weave into this the idea of happiness. ..■'■•
