Discussions on the eve of the Derby are complicated by the fact that there is no candidate entitled to be regarded as a tolerable certainty. There has been a remarkable number of deposed favourites. . . Against the present favourite, Cash Book, indifferent two-year-old performances are mentioned, but his form, at Newmarket in April singles him out as the pick of the English runners. The Aga Khan tips the French horse Goya 11, but the possibility of his own horse, Le Grand Due, completing the hat trick for him cannot bo dismissed.
A prominent racing combination has ended as the result of the decision of George Jones to set up as a public trainer in Victoria. For six and a half years he. has acted as private trainer to Mr. W. R. Kemball, and the horses prepared by him have won thousands of pounds in stakes. In addition to ■Jones, Mr. Kemball also hnd W. Haw'thornc preparing' some of his horses.
